I’ve been living in several countries and witnessed close connections who have been immigrating. I think we all agree that moving abroad is not the magic spell for a perfect life. On the contrag, is a curse and those who do it, will experience life time challenge
Maybe I’m being dramatic or some of you who have achieved the age I am now, agree. I’ve lived in Germany as a kid and trust me, coming back as an adult to the same country doesn’t make it any easier.
When I started a German course in adulthood, I had to begin from level A2. I have even repeated B1 and B2 courses two times over the years. Having C1 now doesn’t mean I am a Master. I struggle everyday with German Grammar to the point that I feel ashamed at work. I am torn between culture and language who never I switch speaking Indonesian, English and German to the people in my life
Don’t get me started with adjusting to the other aspects, such as the financial and taxations systems, familian laws and regulations, and global political situations. Thinking about this makes things like expensive flights back home and missing “ Jajanan Kaki Lima” seem insignificant.
Sometimes I imagine how my life would’ve been if I stayed in Indonesia. Maybe I would’ve been married and had kids already. Maybe bought a house and be in a senior position on the career ladder. But the grass is always greener on the other side, right ?
If I stay in Indonesia, I would’ve dreamed about pursuing a higher education and expanding my cultural horizon. People complain, everyone anywhere in the world. I’m not against complaining. But, comparing on els life with someone else’s who lives in an entirely different country, does not give me (or you) any benefit. Life is too short to move abroad. Life is also too short to stay in our home country. Life is indeed short and we must spend our time wisely. So, at the end of the day, we don’t think about how short life is, but rather how well we spent our days the country we are living in.
